Tee began rapping at the age of 8, but didn’t take it seriously until his first year in high school. It was in high school when Grizzley started to take music seriously and would perform during the school day. After getting expelled in his second year in high school, he decided to drop out of school altogether.
Tee’s work ethic helped him make the connections he needed to begin working on his own music. At age 17, Grizzley was working with Che “Rhymefest” Smith, who helped Grizzley get his first performance at Detroit’s St. Andrew’s Hall.[4]
Tee Grizzley dropped out of high school and got his GED in February 2014. He then began to take music seriously, performing at local Detroit venues where he would often charge for his performances. Grizzley started to make a name for himself when he began releasing his music on various SoundCloud accounts, most notably the account “Trackstarz”. It was this account which helped Grizzley begin opening up for G-Eazy, Lil Durk and other rappers.[5]
Tee’s first release was entitled “Erie Times” which was released on his Trackstarz account in September 2015. He then followed this up by releasing “No Effort”, “Face It” and many more tracks throughout 2016.
The most notable of these early releases was Tee’s track entitled “First Day Out”. The song was recorded the day after Grizzley left prison in April 2016. Tee’s publicist, Dontay Brownlow stated that the song was one of Grizzley’s biggest songs to date.
The success of “First Day Out” led to Tee Grizzley being chosen by Drake to perform at his Houston Appreciation Weekend in July 2016. The following month, Grizzley was chosen as one of “10 Detroit Artists to Watch in 2017” by Fox News.[6]
In the Summer of 2016, Tee Grizzley signed a record deal with 300 Entertainment. His first release under this label was entitled “No Effort”, which was released on November 10, 2016. The single peaked at number 72 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[7]
In February 2017, Tee Grizzley released the single “From the D to the A” featuring Lil Yachty. The song was a reinvention of Atlanta rapper Young Thug’s hit 2015 record “Danny Glover”.
Tee Grizzley released his debut album entitled My Moment on March 23, 2017.[9] The album features artists such as Lil Yachty, Offset and Quavo of Migos. It also includes production from frequent collaborator Helluva and Southside among others.[10]
My Moment debuted at number 50 on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week, with 8,000 copies (sales equivalent units) in the United States.[11]
Personal life and discography
Tee Grizzley has one daughter. She was born in August 2016, shortly before he left prison.[12] Tee Grizzley’s son died in June 2018 at 6 months due to respiratory failure.[13]. He is known for his “No Effort” single.
